Frequently Asked Questions

Where are you situated?

We are on the historic cobbles of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset.

The cottages were built in the 17th century (Heritage listing dates it as 1615) from the stone remaining from Shaftesbury Abbey after the disillusion of the monasteries by King Henry VIII. The cottages look out onto the historic tall stone wall and buttresses which are the remains of Shaftesbury Abbey (established 888AD) by King Alfred the Great. These walls are now Grade I listed and thought to have been built in 1360’s, some 250 years before Button Cottage was built.
