Welcome to Button Cottage on Gold Hill, where you can step back in time and immerse yourself in history and charm. Located on the historic cobbles of Gold Hill in Shaftesbury, Dorset, our cottage offers a unique and characterful experience with breathtaking views of Thomas Hardy's Blackmore Vale.
Button Cottage, built in the late 1500s, holds a rich history dating back to its origins. Once part of the three, the cottage became a single dwelling in 1919. In 1929, the thatched roof was replaced by lowering the ridge and clay tiles added. The Abbey precinct Grade I listed wall (classified as a Scheduled Monument and built over 600 years ago in 1360), stands alongside the steep cobbled street, opposite Button Cottage all adds to its historical significance and preserving its traditional character.
Our Story
Button Cottage on Gold Hill is not just a property; it's a piece of living history. The name 'Button Cottage' itself holds a historical background - In the late 1600s and during the 1700s the main industry in Shaftesbury was making buttons. Button making died out in the 1900s due to machine automation and the Industrial Revolution.
What makes Button Cottage so special is its unique location within the medieval Dorset hilltop market town of Shaftesbury on Gold Hill. The old beams, removed after the dissolution of the Abbey in 1539 and used to build the cottages in and around Shaftesbury that reflects the cottage's unique features and special characteristics. The stunning views across the Blackmore Vale that provide guests with an unforgettable experience.
